SIENA IN OPERA: THEATER IN MUSIC AND GRAND OPERA GALA - AMAT

SIENA IN OPERA: THEATER IN MUSIC AND GRAND OPERA GALA

AMAT - Accademia Musica Arte Teatro

Four new productions are being presented by the Theaters of Siena in collaboration with AMAT, running from October to December, as part of the Siena in Opera series, conceived by Theater Director Vincenzo Bocciarelli.

This program features a variety of musical theater forms catering to all tastes and age groups, ranging from musical fairy tales to opera. The goal is to engage audiences with original productions that embrace the hybridization of the arts and multidisciplinary approaches.

The series includes two Theater in Music performances: it begins on Sunday, October 13, at the Teatro dei Rozzi with the musical fairy tale Il Principe Canarino by Concetta Anastasi, inspired by Italo Calvino’s collection and dedicated to young audiences and their families. The program continues on November 14 with The Soldier’s Tale by Igor Stravinsky, a piece blending prose and music, featuring the special participation of Vincenzo Bocciarelli.

The series culminates with the Grand Opera Gala on December 11 and December 18 at the Teatro dei Rinnovati. Two Puccini masterpieces will be presented in celebration of the centenary of the Tuscan composer’s death: Suor Angelica and Tosca.

The first three productions are part of the Regeneration Opera project, now in its third edition. This initiative, created by AMAT, is supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture and developed in collaboration with the Theaters of Siena, the Fondazione Antico Spedale Santa Maria della Scala, Opera Laboratori, and Sillabe. It represents an experimental approach, blending tradition with contemporary themes to engage in dialogue with today’s society and culture.

The opera Suor Angelica, performed by the AMAT orchestra and cast, offers a unique and unconventional staging. The performance will be preceded by a Prologue explaining the backstory of the opera, created by stage director Sergio Basile in collaboration with students from Liceo Galileo Galilei in Siena. The stage design is crafted by the Scenography School of the Florence Academy of Fine Arts.

Tosca, a production supported by the Municipality and the Theaters of Siena, offers a traditional staging with the exceptional participation of the Puccini Festival Orchestra of Torre del Lago, conducted by Marco Severi and directed by Lorenzo Lenzi. The cast includes soprano Valentina Boi, tenor Samuele Simoncini from Siena, and baritone Francesco Landolfi.

Both operatic performances will feature the collaboration of the Ettore Bastianini Choral Union of Siena.
